Elephants are often referred to as pachyderms. However, their skin is so sensitive that they can even get sunburned. That’s why elephants frequently cover themselves with several layers of mud. This also acts as a pleasant cooling pack against the scorching heat. While their large ears do not allow elephants to hear better than other animals, they help them cope with the African heat. When they flap their ears, the blood inside cools down, providing refreshment.
