Oryx antelopes have horns that are 120 to 150 centimeters long. They derive their name from the Greek word "oryx," which means sharp tool. Lions, leopards, and hyenas learn firsthand that this antelope knows how to defend itself very well. In their desert habitat, temperatures can soar well above 40 degrees Celsius. However, the Oryx antelope has a trick to combat the heat. It raises its own body temperature until it is higher than the surrounding temperature, allowing it to release heat and take in cooler air.
