Schleich Pinto foals are born with their characteristic spotted coat. Over time, colored spots may appear, but the white patches usually do not change. Pintos are often confused with Paint Horses because they look very similar. However, Paint Horses are a distinct breed, while Pintos are a color breed. The beautiful coat patterns can occur in any breed. Animals are then referred to as, for example, Arabian Pintos or Tinker Pintos. There are even Pintaloosas, a mix of Pinto and Appaloosa. The general rule is: if you don't know the breed of a spotted horse, you can safely call it a Pinto. This is always true. While the skin of a gray horse is always black, the skin under the white coat of Pintos is always pink.
