In the railway sector, repair shops (Aw) were responsible for the maintenance of rail vehicles or their components. They specialized in major repairs, overhauls, and the refurbishment of spare parts. Additionally, some repair shops also took on the fabrication of switches, the construction of signal bridges, platform roofs, and similar steel structures. Lothar Weber describes the important role that the repair shops of the Deutsche Reichsbahn of the GDR played in the maintenance and construction of new vehicles. This, of course, can only be understood in the context of the historical development, which the author succinctly outlines in the introduction.
