In the late 1960s, the Deutsche Bundesbahn recognized that the standard locomotives of classes 140 and 150 were insufficient to meet the growing transportation demands. One was too weak (BR 140), and the other was too slow (BR 150). A new type of locomotive was needed. What the engineers then put on the tracks was, in simple terms, a six-axle version of the 140. However, the frame and bogies were inspired by the class 103. The new machine was classified as class 151. With 170 units, it became a defining feature of heavy freight trains. Initially, the locomotives sported a beautiful chrome oxide green livery before switching to the elegant ocean blue/beige. Eventually, after their phase in orient red, they appeared in bright traffic red with single-arm pantographs instead of the original scissors-type current collectors. In this outfit, they were actively in service until the end of their days with DB Cargo in the summer of 2024. Model railway enthusiasts, on the other hand, can expect a significantly longer service life for the 151. Prototype: Electric locomotive class 151 of Deutsche Bahn AG. Basic color scheme in traffic red. Operating number 151 035-3. Operational condition from 2008. Model: With digital decoder mfx+ and extensive sound functions. Regulated high-performance drive with centrally mounted flywheel. Each bogie drives two axles via a cardan shaft. Traction tires. Direction-dependent three-light headlight and two red tail lights conventionally operational, digitally switchable. Headlight on locomotive sides 2 and 1 can be separately switched off digitally. Double-A light function. Cab lighting changes with the direction of travel, and engine room lighting is digitally switchable. Additionally, a starting lamp can be digitally switched depending on the direction of travel. Lighting with maintenance-free warm white and red LEDs. With buffer storage. Detailed roof structures with newly designed single-arm pantographs.
