Justice League Snyder Cut: billboards demand the original version
by Dominik Bärlocher
Filming on the sequel to "Wonder Woman" finished weeks ago. But rumour has it that additional footage has been ordered, which is a real source of concern for DC Comics fans.
"Wonder Woman 1984" - the sequel to the DC Cinematic Universe film released in 2017 starring Gal Gadot in the title role - is reportedly getting additional footage. At least, that's what the "Wonder Woman News" Twitter account would like to have the lowdown on.
Fans of the DC Cinematic Universe are intrigued, and on social networks there's a buzz. The reason for this concern? The many Hollywood productions that have been botched by studio-commissioned post-production. Case in point: "Justice League".
When "Justice League" director Zack Snyder was replaced by director Joss Whedon a month before shooting for family reasons, Whedon and the studio reportedly planned massive reshoots. The finished film was so different from Snyder's original vision that, according to some rumours, the director didn't leave for family reasons, but for creative incompatibilities. The result: some scathing criticism.
"Wonder Woman" fans and director Patty Jenkins now fear a similar fate for "Wonder Woman 1984".
According to reports, parts of the film will be returned to Warner Bros. Studios. Leavesden, near London, much to the dismay of fans, who have reacted to the announcement on social media. Many are also in favour of asking the studio to release Snyder's original vision of "Justice League", the Snyder Cut.
Josh Ells - a Twitter user representing many outlets - has written:
I hope these additional outtakes don't destroy Patty Jenkins' vision. We don't want another #ReleaseTheSnyderCut situation.
Fans fear that the extra shoots weren't organised by Jenkins to make her vision for the film as good as possible. Instead, they fear creative differences with the studio, which is in a strong position. Hence the reshoots. In fact, Patty Jenkins announced this to Movieweb back in May:
I can't wait! I've just shown the studio a version of the film. And conclusion: I wonder if it wouldn't be possible to release it in cinemas earlier than planned? I absolutely have to!
If Jenkins is so happy with the current version, why the re-recordings then?
Only the director can answer that question. It should be noted, however, that re-recordings are commonplace in the business, especially in large-scale Hollywood productions. Even 'Avengers: Endgame' from the Marvel universe - currently the most [successful](https://www.theguardian.com/film/2019/jul/21/avengers-endgame-tops-avatar-to-be-highest-grossing-film) of all time - [is no exception](https://www.screengeek.net/2019/03/20/avengers-endgame-reshoots/) to this rule. Would this be a lot of hype for nothing? [[image:27168407 "Gal Gadot in « Wonder Woman 1984»" "Warner Bros."]] "Wonder Woman 1984" will be released in cinemas on 5 June 2020. The film is set in 1984.
