Apple releases new iPads that (almost) everyone can afford

created on 19.4.2018

Apple's new 9.7-inch iPads sit between the iPad mini 4 and iPad Pro in terms of performance - but are less expensive. They are now available here.

With its 9.7-inch iPad (2018), Apple would like to prove that good is not necessarily synonymous with expensive. The American manufacturer is simply calling its new tablet "iPad" and is primarily targeting occasional users, schoolchildren and students. The motto is: as much performance as possible, but no more than necessary. Here, value for money is at the forefront.

Good image quality, as usual

The iPad's screen is 9.7 inches, putting it directly between the small iPad mini 4 with 7.9 inches and the iPad Pro with 10.5 or 12.9 inches. Thanks to the Retina display with LED backlighting and Multi-Touch functions, you can enjoy Apple's tried-and-tested image quality. The resolution is 2048×1536 pixels and has the same pixel density as iPad Pro models: 264 dpi.

Powerful, high-performance processor

Apple is equipping the new iPad with the fourth-generation "A10 Fusion Chip". In terms of power, it certainly can't really hold its own against the iPad Pro, but, according to the manufacturer, it has double the performance of the second-generation A8 chip built into iPad mini 4 models.

Graphic power is around 2.7 times faster than the iPad mini 4 if Apple is to be believed. You should be able to edit 4K video content or play games with ultra-sophisticated graphics without having to complain about micro cuts. According to the manufacturer, the iPad is equipped with enough performance to use different apps at the same time.

Graphic performance and processor are required for different RA apps. AR stands for augmented reality. Ever since the Pokémon Go craze, the technology has been common knowledge. AR applications can integrate virtual objects with reality. You can, for example, comfortably place virtual appliances or furniture in your home before you buy them.

Apple would also like to offer interactive apps that pupils and students can use during their studies. For example, it would be possible to hold the camera over a skeleton model to see human anatomy interactively. If you hold the camera up to the stars, information about planets, comets and space stations is displayed in real time.

But see for yourself.

Camera and video capture

On the back of the iPad, Apple has integrated an 8-megapixel camera with a ƒ/2.4 aperture. So it's the same equipment as the iPad mini 4 - with the difference that the camera detects bodies and faces. Unlike the iPad Pro's camera, HDR isn't automatically activated when the situation calls for it. But the HDR option is still available.

The iPad shoots video at 1080p resolution, which is Full HD. Unlike iPad Pro owners, you won't be able to shoot 4K video. However, if you're not using your iPad to shoot blockbusters, Full HD will certainly be more than enough. In return, you get 3x video zoom, body and face detection and video stabilisation software. Everything a casual user needs.

Stylets and keyboards

With an additional investment of 100 francs, you get the Apple Pencil. The stylus lets you take notes, comment on emails or write directly into a document. The possibilities are varied and are well explained here. According to Apple, the Pencil has a battery life of 12 hours. Underneath the magnetic cap is a Lightning connector that allows you to plug the stylus into the iPad to charge it, or simply to connect it to the tablet.

The iPad can also be connected to a Bluetooth keyboard. This makes it easier for you to write emails, write presentations or surf the internet.

Fine, lightweight and durable

With a weight of less than 500 grams and a thickness of 7.5 mm, the iPad is ideal for taking with you wherever you go. It's also sturdy and stable enough to survive your outdoor adventures. What's more, the tablet is available in silver, sidereal grey or a never-before-seen gold.

The new «» gold is available exclusively for the iPad 9.7 inch.

In WiFi mode, you surf at up to 866 Mbit/s and if you use the mobile data network, you enjoy up to 300 Mbit/s. If you buy an additional Apple SIM, you get access to cellular data networks in more than 180 countries and regions.

According to Apple, one charge is enough to last up to 10 hours. So, for example, you can watch your favourite series during a flight or a long train journey without always needing to keep an eye on the battery gauge.

According to Apple, one charge is enough to last for up to ten hours.
