Climate contributions and CO2

created on 1.11.2024

Digitec Galaxus is committed to transparency and personal responsibility when it comes to sustainability. That is why we display the CO2 value for each product.

By far the largest emissions in the carbon footprint of Digitec and Galaxus are attributable to the products we sell. The extraction of raw materials, production, transportation, use and disposal all cause greenhouse gas emissions.

As an online marketplace, we can’t do much about that. Sure, we could ban the biggest polluters from our range. But we’re not in a position to tell people what’s right and wrong; instead, we focus on transparency and personal responsibility. That’s why we show how much CO2 each product causes, whereby emissions of other greenhouse gases such as methane, nitrous oxide or fluorocarbons are shown in equivalent tonnes of CO2. You can also make a contribution to climate protection when you shop with us.

How we calculate the CO2 value per product

A CO2 value makes the environmental impact per product transparent and comparable. We have the values calculated by our partner and world market leader for air conditioning solutions South Pole.

South Pole uses the following components for its calculation: material composition, manufacturing process and weight. This approach maps the CO2 value based on the life cycle of a product from the extraction of raw materials to the production (cradle-to-gate).

How the climate contribution is calculated

After calculating the CO2 value per product, delivery to the customer is included in the calculation of the final climate contribution. Digitec Galaxus uses the following formula to calculate this: Climate contribution = footprint of the product in tons of CO2 × price for offsetting one ton of CO2, whereby the price for offsetting one ton of CO2 is 20 Swiss Francs.

This is where the contributions go

The amounts paid by customers go to South Pole’s controlled and certified environmental projects. We’re currently supporting the following projects:
