Fairphone 3: The fair smartphone gets cheaper and better
The Fairphone 3 doesn't want to impress with the best features, but with its concept. The production of the smartphone is intended to be sustainable and fair. The battery can be replaced and the entire device is designed for easy repair - and the features are still not bad.
Compared to its predecessors from 2013 and 2016, the Fairphone 3 has contemporary features. Roughly speaking, it is a mid-range smartphone and, although the demands on suppliers and manufacturing remain high, the price has fallen.
Transparent back and all important interfaces
The Fairphone 3 does not focus on design, but on the uncomplicated assembly of the various components. That's why you're looking at a 5.65-inch display with wide bezels above and below. The touchscreen with an 18:9 aspect ratio has a Full HD+ resolution. The back is made of transparent plastic and reveals the inner workings.
On the inside, the Snapdragon 632 and four gigabytes of RAM ensure that Android 9 Pie runs on the Fairphone 3. The internal memory is 64 gigabytes and can be expanded with a microSD card. The main camera has a resolution of twelve megapixels and the front camera has eight megapixels.
The 3000 mAh battery should power the Fairphone 3 for a whole day and can be charged quickly thanks to QuickCharge 3.0. NFC, Bluetooth 5, dual SIM, a USB-C port, a fingerprint sensor on the back and a 3.5 mm audio connection round off the features of the Fairphone 3.
All necessary repair tools included in the scope of delivery
From the extraction of raw materials for the components to the assembly of the individual components and recycling: the Fairphone should not exploit people or nature. This includes reasonable payment for all people involved in any way, a sustainable approach to the extraction of raw materials, the use of recycled materials and a long service life and useful life of the smartphones.
The modular design of the Fairphone 3 is intended to make it as easy as possible to replace damaged parts. The individual components are not glued together and you only need the small screwdriver supplied with the Fairphone 3 to disassemble and reassemble it. While Fairphone has not been one of the fastest smartphone manufacturers when it comes to software updates in the past, the manufacturer kept spare parts available for its first Fairphone for four years.
In order to produce less electronic waste, the manufacturer does not include headphones, a power adapter or a USB cable with the Fairphone 3. Given the technology you probably have, this shouldn't be a problem.
