Gamesir G7 Pro 8K Aim Labs Edition tested: The D-Pad steals the show

With the G7 Pro 8K Aim Labs Edition, Gamesir is launching a controller that combines an 8K polling rate, improved TMR sticks and a revised D-pad - for less than 100 francs/euros. But is it worth the extra cost compared to the standard model?

The controller market leaves you spoilt for choice. As soon as you get used to a model, the manufacturer comes up with an improved version. Gamesir does this with the G7 Pro 8K Aim Labs Edition and promises even better performance than the already impressive standard G7 Pro - especially for PC gamers.

Familiar shape, better workmanship

Like its predecessor, the G7 Pro 8K is comfortable to hold. The asymmetrical stick layout is reminiscent of the Xbox controller. Anyone who likes this will immediately feel at home. Even after long gaming sessions, the ergonomics remain convincing.

Compared to the standard model, the new version scores with noticeably better workmanship. The controller appears more robust, more pressure-resistant and more durable. Even when pressed hard, nothing creaks and the housing remains stable. Rubberised grips and a centre section made of hard plastic complement each other well. Although it doesn't reach the level of a Microsoft Elite, the quality is impressive for the price.

Optically, the Aim Labs Edition is polarising. The black casing with turquoise-coloured accents and gold D-pad is either appealing or not. Those who prefer alternative faceplates should opt for the standard model.

More modularity

The G7 Pro was already modular, but the 8K version goes one better. The magnetic front panel can be easily removed, which makes cleaning and personalisation easier. The scope of delivery includes various stick attachments: concave, convex, high and low. Fighting game fans or platformer players will be delighted with the traditional D-pad, which can be quickly replaced.

The controller can be easily disassembled into its individual parts.

Two programmable paddles are located on the back, which can be locked if required. Two switches shorten the trigger travel - ideal for switching between racing games and shooters. In addition to the shoulder buttons, there are two further programmable buttons. The supplied charging dock with dongle compartment keeps the controller organised and always ready for use.

Strong performance

The G7 Pro 8K is impressive in practice. The Magres Gen-2 TMR sticks respond precisely, smoothly and offer pleasant resistance. With a dead zone of zero, they register even the smallest movements - ideal for precision games, but take some getting used to.

The reverb effect triggers can be switched from analogue to digital, making it easier to switch between genres. The face buttons offer a clear, pleasant click feel.

The D-Pad is the highlight. Compared to the standard model, the difference is enormous: it responds precisely, feels firm and avoids spongy inputs - a clear improvement that is immediately noticeable.

Whether wired, via dongle or Bluetooth - the connection remains stable. The dongle is recommended for maximum performance. Especially in fast-paced games such as «Hollow Knight: Silksong» you can feel the difference compared to Bluetooth.

The vibration motors provide solid haptic feedback, but do not reach the intensity of a Dualsense. Three adjustable strengths allow individual customisation. A 6-axis gyro sensor completes the package - a niche feature that scores points in compatible games.

8K polling rate: more appearance than reality

For most gamers, the difference between 1000 and 8000 hertz (Hz) remains imperceptible. The 0.125 ms response time of the 8K polling rate not only requires a fast PC, but also a scenario in which it is really relevant. Even with computer mice, which react faster than controllers, the high polling rate rarely brings advantages. Only competitive players could benefit from this small advantage.

One disadvantage: the 8K polling rate drains the battery faster. At 1000 Hz, the controller lasts around ten hours, at 8K significantly less. The charging dock helps to top up the battery regularly without having to think about it too much.

Software with weaknesses

The Gamesir Connect app allows you to create profiles, remap buttons and adjust the stick sensitivity under Windows. Functional, but not very polished, it lags behind the software of major manufacturers. Once set up, everything runs reliably. Annoying: Gamesir uses different apps for different controllers - this causes confusion.

More features and compatibility

The G7 Pro 8K connects via USB-C cable, 2.4 GHz dongle or Bluetooth. A 3.5 mm connection enables the use of wired headsets. The charging dock offers space for the dongle so that charging and wireless gaming work via a single cable.

Primarily developed for Windows, the controller also supports Android, iOS, Linux and Mac. A wired connection to the Xbox and Nintendo Switch is possible, but not wirelessly.

In a nutshell

Strong PC controller with minor weaknesses

The Gamesir G7 Pro 8K Aim Labs Edition impresses with a massively improved D-pad, precise Gen 2 TMR sticks, extensive accessories and a practical charging dock. For less than 100 francs/euros, it is one of the best controllers on the market - at least for PC gamers.

The only downside: Gamesir is competing with itself. The cheaper standard G7 Pro offers an almost equivalent experience for most people. The extra price is mainly worth it for the better D-pad, the Gen 2 sticks and the 8K polling rate - the latter, however, only for competitive players.

An excellent alternative to the G7 Pro 8K would be the Flydigi Vader Pro 5, which does not have an 8K polling rate, but also offers excellent workmanship, a great feel and precision.

Pro

  • Excellent D-Pad
  • High-quality workmanship for the price range
  • Extensive accessories including charging dock
  • Precise Gen 2 TMR sticks
  • Very fast response times

Contra

  • 8K polling irrelevant for most players
  • High battery consumption with 8K polling rate
  • Software could be more intuitive
