Intel introduces Raptor Lake CPUs

Translation: machine translated

Intel's 13th generation processors will be released on 20 October. The six new desktop CPUs have up to 24 cores and a clock frequency of up to 5.8 GHz. At the presentation, CEO Pat Gelsinger also announced the price and sales date of the Arc A770 graphics card.

After AMD, Intel has now also officially presented its new CPUs. Intel's new Raptor Lake processors will arrive on 20 October. The manufacturer announced this on Tuesday at its presentation in California. Intel has announced six new desktop CPUs. The flagship is the new i9-13900K(F) with 24 cores - eight of them performance and 16 efficiency cores - and 32 threads. The clock frequency of 5.8 gigahertz (GHz) is 600 megahertz higher than that of the predecessor model. This makes the new CPU 15 per cent faster in single thread and 41 per cent faster in multi-thread, according to Intel.

Favourably priced, but more power-hungry than AMD competition

The Core i9-13900K(F) requires only 12 more than the last generation to do so, with a maximum thermal design power (TDP) of 253 watts. Compared to AMD's new top-of-the-line 5.7GHz Ryzen 9 5950X CPU, that's still a lot; the latter requires a maximum of 170 watts. The i9-13900K costs 699 francs less than the Ryzen, which costs 849 francs. Without integrated graphics, Intel's flagship is another 50 francs cheaper.

Intel's own performance comparisons

At the presentation, Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger spoke of a performance jump in games of up to 24 per cent compared to the old i9-12900K, although the performance seems to depend heavily on the game in question: the 20 per cent was measured in "League of Legends", in other games the increase is smaller, in "Horizon Zero Dawn" the graphics even showed a small performance drop. Conspicuously absent from Intel's presentation were comparisons with AMD's new processors, even though the embargo on them had already been lifted the day before.

Same socket and DDR4 support

The 13th Intel generation is still manufactured in the 10-nanometre process. It continues to support DDR4 up to 3200 MHz in addition to the new DDR5 RAM up to 5600 MHz. Also pleasing for all those who want to upgrade: The new CPUs still fit into the LGA1700 socket. Here is an overview of all the CPUs presented:

Upgrades also for the cheaper models

The cheaper processors are also said to be significantly faster than the previous versions. The i7-13700K for 499 francs has 16 cores - eight performance and eight efficiency cores - and offers a boost clock of up to 5.4 GHz. The maximum TDP is also 253 watts. At the lower end of the line-up sits the i5-13600K(F). It costs 379 francs at the start in the version with integrated graphics. The cheapest new CPU has 14 cores, six of which are performance and eight efficiency cores, and boasts up to 5.1 GHz. Its maximum TDP is 181 watts. Incidentally, all new CPUs are "unlocked" and can be overclocked.

Arc 770 coming in October

At the presentation, Gelsinger also finally announced the price and sales date of the first Arc graphics card: The Arc 770 will cost $329 in the US and will be available there from 12 October. The price is in the range of Nvidia's RTX 3060, with which it is supposed to compete. Intel claims the Arc 770 will offer up to 65 per cent more ray tracing performance over competing products.

My fingerprint often changes so drastically that my MacBook doesn't recognise it anymore. The reason? If I'm not clinging to a monitor or camera, I'm probably clinging to a rockface by the tips of my fingers.
