The "B-Box" from the Italian company "Beeing" is designed to simplify beekeeping. It has a compact and patented harvesting system that enables honey production at home on the balcony or in the backyard.

Of course, I don't like to see bees buzzing around me, but I know how important they are to you and me. Apart from the fact that they are responsible for fine honey, they take care of pollination, on which our global food supply depends. Because beekeeping has so far been unattractive for private individuals, especially for city dwellers who live in confined spaces, a patented honey harvesting system from the Italian design studio "Beeing" is now set to make it easier to raise bees in urban areas.

On the platform Indiegogo, which supports tech and design ideas before they are commercialised, the crowdfunding campaign for Beeing's "B-Box" has been running for several days. As of today, 18 July, 294 supporters have already pledged over 164,159 euros. This means that the project has far exceeded its original target of 40,000 euros. And the campaign still has 21 days to go.

Safe, practical, good

The B-Box is more compact than previous beehives: measuring 67 × 47 cm and 2.2 m high, it takes up less than one square metre of space and even fits on a small city balcony. "The patented system separates the area where the bees live from the area where they store honey, so you can extract it safely without a veil or gloves and without coming into contact with the bees," explains Beeing.

"You can separate the comb chamber from the rest of the hive with a lever. Bees can leave the comb chamber, but not enter it. The chamber empties itself within a few hours, so you can harvest honey in a bee-free environment." The only entrance for the bees is at a height of 2.2 metres. So you can approach without inhibition and observe the lower part of the box. This is intended to take away the fear of keeping bees at home.

A new generation of beekeepers

The B-Boxes will be available from Beeing from November. The early bird offer currently costs 664 francs, while the regular price will be 1,107 francs. The fact that so many patrons are willing to pay this hefty sum shows that a redesign of existing beehives is welcome. If you would also like to be part of a new generation of beekeepers, I ask you:

Should we include the design hive in the assortment if possible?
