Xiaomi plans to install new batteries in its smartphones. They’re supposed to offer ten per cent more capacity at the same size.

Ten per cent more battery capacity doesn’t sound like much. But according to Xiaomi, on a small device like a smartphone, this can mean an extra 100 minutes of battery life – something the Chinese company hopes to take advantage of.

Smaller circuits, more silicon on the electrodes

Xiaomi unveiled its novel «high-silicon lithium» battery technology on the Chinese microblogging website Weibo. There are reportedly two main reasons that allow for a higher capacity with the same size: first, there’s three times as much silicon on the negative electrodes as in previous lithium-ion batteries. Second, a new packaging technology is supposed to allow for a smaller control circuit. An image published by Xiaomi shows the new battery is slightly smaller than the current lithium-ion battery.

Xiaomi plans to start mass production of the new batteries in the second half of 2022. With that, the batteries won’t make it into Xiaomi’s upcoming high-end smartphone, the Xiaomi 12. But starting at the end of next year, the new batteries could find their way into new smartphones.

When I was but a young student, I'd sit in my friend's living room with all my classmates and play on his SuperNES. Since then I've had the opportunity to test out all the newest technology for you. I've done reviews at Curved, Computer Bild and Netzwelt, and have now arrived at Galaxus.de.
