The first 10 nm processors have finally arrived. After years of delay, Intel has made it: the chips codenamed «Ice Lake» are now in serial production. The first notebooks are most likely scheduled for the end of November.

As Intel announced at a shareholders' meeting, the first Ice Lake CPUs have been distributed to OEM partners. The notebook processors are now in serial production. By the end of the year, manufacturers will be able to launch the first laptops with 10 nm Intel processors. Intel CEO Bob Swan gave a rough release date of the American Holiday Season, which begins at the end of November.

«Ice Lake» processors boast up to four cores, are energy-saving and have been developed for laptops. Compared to the «Skylake» processors introduced in 2015, they're said to process 18 percent more instructions per clock cycle (IPC) at the same frequency. Depending on the processor, the TDP is 9, 15 or 28 watts. Among other things, the microarchitecture of the new processors supports AVX512 VNNI, which allows for better performance when calculating algorithms for neural networks, for instance. The new processor is also equipped with an integrated graphics unit (Gen 11) with a maximum of 64 execution units and offers native support for DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.0b and HDCP 2.2.

Faster chips with 10 nm manufacturing technology for notebooks and desktop use (Ice Lake-S) aren’t expected to be launched before 2020 or even 2021.

Let’s see which manufacturer will present the first notebook with a 10 nm processor at this year's IFA.
