Nothing Ear (1): true wireless earphones with ANC at a bargain price

Translation: Veronica Bielawski

True wireless earbuds with active noise cancellation for 99 euros, dollars or pounds! That’s a serious statement, as this is the company’s first product release.

OnePlus cofounder Carl Pei has turned his back on smartphones. He founded a new company, Nothing, in October 2020. Nothing aims to create a digital ecosystem – starting with the Ear (1).

Official announcement on 27 July

The official presentation of the Ear (1) is scheduled for 27 July 2021. But the PR machine is already rolling. Carl Pei especially caused a stir when he discussed the price of the Ear (1) in an interview with the US blog Techcrunch. He expects a retail price of 99 euros. While this is not yet an official recommended retail price, it attracts attention; other true wireless headphones with active noise cancellation are significantly more expensive. The AirPods Pro, Sony WF-1000XM4 and the likes come in at about double the price. Even the slightly older Sony WF-1000XM3 are still far from a double-digit price tag.

I think it’s going to be a good price at 99 USD, 99 EUR and 99 GBP.
Carl Pei, Nothing

The low price, he said, is made possible in part by Nothing’s focus on online sales, which means it incurs lower distribution and advertising costs. Pei also says the Nothing Ear (1) are on par with the AirPods Pro in terms of features. A trio of microphones is supposed to sense the environment and make the earbuds’ active noise cancellation possible.

Nothing has already named Europe as the sales territory for the launch of the Ear (1). But exactly which countries this includes, what else the earbuds can do and what they actually look like will probably remain a secret until 27 July.

Nothing: less is more

The teaser image in this article shows Concept (1), which Nothing used to illustrate its design principles in March 2021.

  • Weightless: anything superfluous – both visually and functionally – should be removed.
  • Effortless: using the products should be simple.
  • Timeless: the products should still look modern in a few years’ time.

When I was but a young student, I'd sit in my friend's living room with all my classmates and play on his SuperNES. Since then I've had the opportunity to test out all the newest technology for you. I've done reviews at Curved, Computer Bild and Netzwelt, and have now arrived at Galaxus.de.
