Pia's picks: lamps that celebrate cables instead of hiding them

What if cables no longer had to be concealed, but were part of the concept from the outset? Lamps that cleverly integrate rather than conceal cables could be the solution.

Cable. Nobody wants to see them, but without them it's often impossible. For many years, I tried to conceal them - behind furniture, in cable ducts, under carpets. But maybe I should think the other way round: welcome them instead of banishing them.

Perhaps the problem is that they are often not integrated into the design concept. Some designers have recognised this - and deliver lamps that manage the balancing act: they legitimise cables by using them as a design element. This approach gives the lamps a unique character.

Celebrating the necessary evil

An example: the «Orey» collection from Kave Home. Here, the power supply is not simply hidden, but integrated into the shape of the lamp. It winds elegantly along the stand like a vine and thus becomes a style element.

Then there are models such as the «Belle» from Zuiver. Here, the cable almost becomes a minor matter because the entire floor lamp is a statement. Inspired by the timeless elegance of actress Sophia Loren, «Belle» brings not only light but also style to the room. The twisted rope lampshade is reminiscent of the Italian actress's iconic hats and floats above the round light source - straight or slightly tilted, just as you like.

Hello cable clutter

It's time to rethink. Cables are not the problem. They are just misunderstood design victims that have received too little love so far. Who knows, maybe one day I'll no longer see them as a disruptive factor, but as an opportunity to personalise rooms.

Until then: switch on the lights, show the cables proudly - or at least integrate them cleverly.
