Sony announces a new, thinner PS5 model. The drive can be removed. The console is to be released later this year.
The rumours about a new PS5 model have come true. In a blog post, Sony announced a redesigned version of the Playstation 5. The new console is said to be 30 per cent smaller and 24 per cent lighter than the previously available models.
The Blu-Ray drive of the new PS5 model is detachable. You can buy the new model as a standard or digital version. If you opt for the digital version, you can upgrade the console with a drive later. This can be docked flush to the PS5. This way, the additional hardware doesn't look like an external drive. In the standard version, the Blu-Ray drive is already installed, but you can remove it at any time if necessary.
A new vertical stand is also available separately. This is also compatible with the old PS5 models.
Nothing has changed inside the new models. The new consoles are not "pro" upgrades with updated processors or graphics cards. Only the storage space has been increased to 1 TB.
The new PS5 models should be available this year. Sony does not reveal when exactly. Both variants are around 50 euros more expensive than the current models. The version with a Blu-Ray drive will cost 550 euros, according to Sony. The digital version costs 450 euros. For the separate drive upgrade, you pay 120 euros. The vertical stand will cost 30 euros.

Outwardly, the variant without the drive looks much thinner than the original, especially in the lower section. There are now not two large but four smaller faceplates on the sides of the console. They conceal the removable drive and the modularity of the new model. The upper faceplates have a mirrored "glossy" look. The lower plates are matte as usual. Sony has not announced if and when coloured custom covers will be coming for the new model.
