Cinemas are open again and things are happening in the world of movie trailers. That’s why this week’s edition of Trailer Tuesday is, once again, all about the latest and greatest movie and series trailers.

This week's Trailer Tuesday features:

  • «Greenland», cinema release: 14 August 2020
  • «The Boys, season 2», start date: 4 April 2020, Amazon Prime Video
  • «Candyman», cinema release: 24 September 2020
  • «Over the Moon», start date: autumn 2020, Netflix
  • «Respect», cinema release: 25 December 2020

Greenland

Oh well, another comet that threatens to shatter the world. In this movie, however, it seems to pass our earth without danger – except that a fragment will break off and land somewhere in the ocean, causing zero damage. No problem. No problem? Hello?! «Deep Impact», anyone?

Well, the problem in «Greenland» isn't the fragment itself. The problem is that it doesn't end up in the ocean. It hits San Francisco instead. What's worse is that, as the news speaker announces, more fragments will follow – one possibly so large it threatens to wipe out mankind. In the middle of it all: John (Gerard Butler) with his wife and child.

I don't know. There's nothing bad to say about the trailer, but the bigger-than-life father, who does everything to protect his family in the midst of a disaster, including an airplane trip to possibly the last safe haven of mankind – Greenland – is so old and stale since «2012» that I don't really want to watch the film. Maybe I will, with some beer and popcorn. Lots of popcorn!

Cinema release: 14 August 2020

The Boys, season 2

Not long before we finally get to enjoy season two of «The Boys». The above video isn't a trailer, it's a clip. It probably shows Stormfronts (Aya Cash) first appearance. Stormfront is the new member of the Seven. He replaces Translucent (Alex Hassell), who died. He exploded.

Antony Starr shows as excellent performance, as always. He plays Homelander, the Superman Captain America rip-off. And he plays it so convincingly that you can literally see the psychopath in him who's forced to play the polite and good-natured hero, even though he would like to see the world burn – and has the skills to actually set it on fire.

By the way: if you want to see the first three minutes of the first episode of the second season, click here.. It's not a leak, it was shown in a one-hour stream on the Prime Video YouTube channel.

Start date: 4 September 2020, Amazon Prime Video

Candyman

Originally, the remake of the horror classic «Candyman» should have been released in cinemas in May. Oh well, then I'll have to treat myself to the bee-in-mouth scene a little later in the year.

The remake will be directed by horror expert Jordan Peele, who is also responsible for «Get Out» and «Us». And the trailer looks good enough to tempt me to watch the movie – even though I already know that I'm going to faint again during the bee-in-mouth scene.

Over the Moon

Aaaaw.

There, I said it. Sorry. But I can't help it, this animation is just so cute. Especially the bunny. Omg, aaaw. Ahem. Now. What's «Over the Moon» about, you ask?

So do I. The trailer shows a girl whose mother has died and who wants to build a rocket to prove the existence of a moon goddess. But from minute 2:30 the trailer takes a turn that I didn't see coming.

Sounds cute. The movie is directed by Glen Kean. He isn't a well-known director. Actually, «Over the Moon» might be his first real directing job. Kean is a full-time, highly decorated old-school illustrator. He has mainly worked in Disney movies and designed and drew some of the most famous characters. Arielle for example. Or the Beast. Aladdin and Tarzan. All these characters are his designs.

I'm curious to see this movie. Especially because the style reminds me less of Disney and more of Dreamworks. I've liked this style since the celebrated «How to Train your Dragon», the underestimated «Croods» and the successful «Everest». And since «Klaus», I know Netflix has a good feeling for animated films.

Start date: autumn 2020, Netflix

Respect

I like the trailer. Actress Jennifer Hudson, who didn't exactly cause a sensation recently with «Cats», plays the legendary soul singer Aretha Franklin. A great cast, as Hudson would have been Franklin's first choice anyway, if she herself had been allowed to choose an actress to play her. Unfortunately, that didn't happen, as Franklin died of pancreatic cancer in 2018.

But then the trailer overdoes it with its reference to the song «Respect». Ok, I get it, the movie is about respect. Respect for coloured people. Respect for women. And it's probably Franklin's most famous song, which became the anthem of the African American US population in the late 1960s – described by der Zeit a few years ago as a «manifesto of the black liberation fight». And yes, also as the anthem of the feminist movement.

Therefore, the song surely is fitting. But the way the trailer is cut just makes it looks as if somebody couldn't stop pushing the repeat button. Oh well. Could be worse. I'm definitely looking forward to this movie.

Cinema release: 25 December 2020
