Trailer Tuesday: The Dark Crystal, Rambo 5 and Ford v. Ferrari

Netflix is bringing back puppets from the 80’s, one last ride for Sylvester Stallone’s Rambo and director James Mangold is chronicling the bitter rivalry between two car manufacturers in «Ford v. Ferrari».

The new Netflix show «The Dark Crystal» is a complete 80’s power trip, combining ancient puppetting techniques with brand-new CGI. Sylvester Stallone probably read last week’s Trailer Tuesday and thought: «You know what, why don’t I dust off one of my few famous characters for one last joyride?» James Mangold’s «Ford v. Ferrari» claims to base its plot off true events. And then there’s the Russian «Koma», whose visuals look incredibly promising. Finally, Disney Pixar’s «Onward» offers up a fantasy plot in a modern setting.

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance

Okay. This was my first thought after watching this trailer: «What in the...?» Somehow this whole thing reminds me of something. A quick look on IMDB confirms my suspicions: there already is a «The Dark Crystal», from 1982. Not that much has changed since then: puppets are still the main feature. «Age of Resistance», however, is set before the events of the 1982 original. The plot revolves around a fantastical world named Thra and its dark crystal, a possible source of power for the evil Skeksis. Really. I still don’t know if I’m supposed to love the nostalgia of it or just be confused. Help.

Start date: 30/8/2019, Netflix

Rambo: Last Blood

Beware of an old man in a profession where men usually die young – the central theme behind «Rambo: Last Blood». The music fits, Sylvester Stallone’s rough voice growls out of your speakers and many death traps await: John Rambo is back one last time. At least, that’s what I gathered from the subtitle «Last Blood», a clever nod to the 1982 original «First Blood», released without the «Rambo» title.

Koma

An architect wakes up in a fragmented reality based on memories and some physical laws after a mysterious accident that sent him into a coma. These laws, however, can be broken. The architect decides to study them in order to fully comprehend his new strange world. Visually «Koma», the directorial debut of the Russian special effects artist Nikita Argunov, seems like a mixture of «Inception» and «Dr. Strange». The first teaser was already released back in 2016, then the filmmakers became unusually quiet. Now there’s at least an official release date for Russian audiences, as well as a new trailer for the rest of us. I'm dying to see it.

Ford v. Ferrari

Le Mans, 1966. Car manufacturer Ford wants to establish itself in Europe. To do this, the company aims to defeat its legendary competitor Ferrari at the world-famous race. But first they have to find a suitable car - within 90 days. Racing car driver and sports car designer Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon) joins Ken Miles (Christian Bale) behind the wheel to tackle this challenge. James Mangold directs, meanwhile having established himself as one of the best directors around today, having already made «Logan». Oscar contender. Well, there you have it.

Onward

Gremlins. Trolls. Elves. A world of might and magic. All this and more used to be in Pixar’s «Onward». In the meanwhile, this fantasy world has reached a modern age. Airplanes interrupt the quiet beauty an unicorns fish trash out of bins. In between all of this, two elven brothers (Chris Pratt and Tom Holland) set out to find out if there's still a spark of magic out there. No, the trailer didn't blow my mind. But it's Pixar. Whatever those crazy boys and girls do in Emeryville, California, it’s usually at least good.
