We’re celebrating 25 years – and our founders are sharing their stories

To mark Digitec Galaxus’s 25th anniversary, our two founders talk about how they run the company and what drives them to this day. Florian Teuteberg and Oliver Herren are clear about one thing: bold decisions are part of the company culture.

They don’t like being the centre of attention, but they know people want to hear from them for Digitec Galaxus’s 25-year anniversary. In the spring of 2001, university buddies Oliver Herren, Marcel Dobler and Florian Teuteberg founded a company called Nägeli Trading & Co., which ran an online shop under digitec.ch. Digitec sold everything you needed to get your PC up and running to play the latest games.

Business was good and the company grew. In 2005, the general partnership transformed into a limited company. Galaxus was launched in 2012, offering all things beyond electronics ever since – from household appliances and sports gear to clothes and books.

Founders stay on after Migros’ investment

2012 was also the year Migros acquired a 30 per cent stake in the company. Florian Teuteberg and Oliver Herren stayed on board as CEO and CIO (Chief Innovation Officer), respectively. Marcel Dobler, on the other hand, left the company.

From building Galaxus to developing in-house software to run the shops and huge growth during the pandemic, these were exciting years for the two founders. In the interview, CEO Florian Teuteberg says the first 25 years were shaped by «confidence and courage». Even so, he says they never expected Digitec Galaxus to become this big. «Good thing it turned out this way,» adds Oliver Herren.

Long-term success over short-term profit

What matters most to the two founders is that the company culture has been preserved. Despite the company’s size, good ideas still get a chance, no matter who they come from. Hierarchy is irrelevant in this case. The ideas most likely to be implemented are the ones that make the shop better for users, not the ones that promise a quick boost in sales. «We think very long term,» says Florian Teuteberg.

There’s just one thing they’re reluctant to think about, and that’s continuing to run Digitec Galaxus themselves in 25 years’ time. «Someone younger will have to take over by then,» says Florian Teuteberg.
