Will MediaTek release the first 4nm chipset?

Translation: Eva Francis

According to reports, the Taiwanese chip manufacturer is about to take an important step forward. MediaTek seems to be working on a high-end system-on-chip (SoC).

MediaTek will be the first chip manufacturer to launch a 4nm chipset. This is reported by the tech blog GSMarena, citing two independent sources. Production is supposed to start towards the end of the year.

Apparently, some manufacturers have already placed orders for the high-end SoC. Who? Oppo, Xiaomi, Samsung and Vivo.

The downside is that MediaTek has secured the 4nm contract from TSMC at a high price – around $80 per unit. To put this into perspective: current high-end 5nm chipsets are available at a price between $30 and $35. According to GSMarena, MediaTek's hardware will be able to challenge today's Snapdragon 800 series and also significantly reduce power consumption. Right now, these are all just rumours. We’ll have to wait almost a year to see if MediaTek will deliver.
