Window cleaning: the next household chore to be outsourced to robots

Thanks to robots, that annual spring clean is getting easier and easier. Following the surge in popularity experienced by robot vacuum cleaners, robot window cleaners are now in high demand on Galaxus. But it isn’t tech-savvy younger generations who’re turning to cleaning gadgets – it’s older customers.

Is spring cleaning becoming a thing of the past? These days, robot vacuum cleaners do a reliable job of blitzing dust and dirt all year round, with some even mopping floors as they go. Outside the home, gardeners have had it easy since robot lawn mowers came on the scene.

The only thing left to smudge this pretty domestic picture (quite literally) is dirty windows. Especially now that there’s pollen swirling through the air and sticking to the glass. However, in this day and age, where there’s a problem, there’s a robot. Sales of window-cleaning robots on Galaxus have been rising steeply for years. In 2025, sales of the devices rose 74 per cent compared to the previous year. So far this year, sales have increased yet again – by just under 60 per cent.

Conventional window vacs, by contrast, are losing ground. Demand for the devices has fallen over the past two years despite the continued growth of online retail.

This can’t be down to price. While the average cost of window-cleaning robots has been hovering above the 300-franc mark for years, window vacs have become increasingly affordable. At the moment, buying a window vacuum on Galaxus will set you back 57 francs on average.

Saving money vs. saving time – the generational divide

According to experts, gen Z is the first generation to have grown up with smart devices (page in German). When it comes to window cleaning, however, the younger generation still prefers to do it by hand. Assuming they do it at all, that is. Customers under 35 account for just one in ten robot window cleaner sales. For window vacuums, the figure rises to around one in three.

Older generations, meanwhile, have taken a liking to household tech – and are by far the most likely to use window cleaning robots. To be precise, they buy 40 per cent of the robot window cleaners sold on Galaxus. With this in mind, being called a «boomer» in relation to technology could be a compliment too. At least when it comes to window cleaning.

How clean are your windows right now? Do you plan to give them a lovely spring clean? We’re looking forward to reading your comments.
