Xiaomi is continuing its expansion in Europe and has unveiled two new smartphones in Madrid: the Mi Note 10 and the Redmi Note 8T. While the former boasts 108 megapixels, the latter is extremely affordable for its features.

Like Huawei, Xiaomi comes from China, but has not yet been banned by the US government and can therefore use all Google services on its smartphones without restriction. Xiaomi remains true to its strategy of offering its own smartphones at very attractive prices.

Xiaomi Mi Note 10

The Mi Note 10 is the new star among the manufacturer's many smartphones. It is attracting a lot of attention because of its 108-megapixel image sensor. This comes from Samsung. The Mi Note 10 is the first smartphone from Xiaomi to be equipped with this. That's quite a lot of pixels for the small sensor area that is possible in a smartphone. Practical tests will have to show how this affects image noise In the past, however, more megapixels did not automatically lead to better image quality. Software processing now plays a major role and this is also active in the Mi Note 10. By default, the camera delivers photos with a resolution of 27 megapixels. The software converts four pixels into one.

In addition to the main camera with these 27 - or 108 - megapixels, Xiaomi has installed four other cameras in the smartphone: a wide-angle lens with 20 megapixels, two telephoto lenses with 12 and 5 megapixels as well as a five-fold and two-fold zoom and a macro lens with 2 megapixels. The front camera has a resolution of 32 megapixels. The camera experts from DxoMark were able to test the Xiaomi Mi CC9 Pro and were very impressed. With 121 points in the overall result, it shares the top spot with the Huawei Mate 30 Pro - which is only officially available to buy in some countries so far.

Apart from the camera, you can expect a 6.47-inch AMOLED display with full HD+ resolution (2340 × 1080 pixels) and the Snapdragon 730G on the Xiaomi Mi Note 10. This is not the most powerful chipset from Qualcomm, but even as a chipset from the second series, it should have enough power for your everyday life. The battery with a capacity of 5260 mAh gives hope for a long runtime. It is charged via a USB-C port and headphones can be plugged into the 3.5 mm jack via cable. The fingerprint sensor is located in or under the display.

The MIUI 11 user interface, which is based on Android 9, is installed on the Mi Note 10 ex works. Xiaomi promises an update to Android 10 later this year.

The Xiaomi Mi Note 10 will cost 549 or 649 euros. Depending on whether the RAM and internal memory are 6 and 128 or 8 and 256 gigabytes in size.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 8T

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 8T is significantly cheaper than the Mi Note 10, but also has four cameras on board. A main camera with 48 megapixels - although a lower resolution is also used here as standard - and a wide-angle lens with eight megapixels are supplemented by Xiaomi with a macro camera with two megapixels and a fourth lens with two megapixels, which is intended to provide depth of field information for portrait shots. The front camera takes selfies with 13 megapixels.

The display of the Redmi Note 8T is slightly smaller than the Note 10 at 6.3 inches, but has the same resolution of 2340 × 1080 pixels. Under the bonnet is the Snapdragon 665, a slower chipset that should still have enough computing power for everyday use and is unusual in this price range. It is supported by four gigabytes of RAM and you can expand the 64 gigabytes of internal memory with a microSD card. Xiaomi has also presented other storage variants - 3 and 32 as well as 4 and 128 gigabytes - but these are only intended for other countries.

The battery capacity of 4000 mAh is also outstanding in this price range. Not every expensive flagship model can keep up with this. The battery is charged via a USB-C port and there is a 3.5 mm socket for headphone cables. An NFC chip is built in for mobile payments and there is a fingerprint sensor on the back.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 8T will be available from mid-November and the recommended retail price is 199 euros in Germany. We have not yet received prices in francs for Switzerland for either device. <p

When I was but a young student, I'd sit in my friend's living room with all my classmates and play on his SuperNES. Since then I've had the opportunity to test out all the newest technology for you. I've done reviews at Curved, Computer Bild and Netzwelt, and have now arrived at Galaxus.de.
