Yes, choosing the right mascara is important, but this technique makes all the difference

When it comes to applying make-up, there’s no right or wrong way. But there are techniques that can help you get much more impressive results than others. Just like these for your mascara.
A zigzag motion – that’s how most people (myself included, until recently) apply mascara to their eyelashes. In other words, they start with the mascara brush at the base of their lashes and work their way up to the tips using left to right strokes. And usually apply several layers. It’s quick and easy, but it also has its drawbacks: the lashes become heavy and limp, or clump together near the roots, where the hairs grow close together.
But there’s another way. With the «step-by-step technique» – that’s what I call it – you can build maximum length without weighing your lashes down unnecessarily. And the strands look neatly separated.
Here’s how
Step 1:
Use an eyelash curler to give your lashes some curl: place it at the base of your lashes and hold for 10 seconds. Then reposition the pliers slightly above the previous spot. About halfway up your eyelashes. Press again and wait 10 seconds. Repeat this one last time right below the tips of your lashes.
Step 2:
Grab your favourite mascara. If there’s a lot of product on your brush, I recommend gently wiping it off on a tissue.
Step 3:
Start by applying mascara only to the tips of your lashes using a vertical motion. From the front as well as from the back, provided there is enough space between the eyelashes and the eyelid. Let this first coat dry for 20 seconds.
Step 4:
For the second coat, start at the middle of your lashes and sweep the mascara toward the tips. Let this coat dry for 20 seconds, too. If you’re into a look that’s as natural and lifted as possible, you can stop right here. The gap between your lash line and the mascara makes your eyes look more open.
Step 5:
For maximum length, I recommend a third and final round. This time, place the brush at the base of your lashes and sweep the mascara along their entire length.
Voilà.
I noticed a significant difference in the results when I used this method. The tips of my lashes look more defined, and the curl from the eyelash curler lasts longer. Also, the look is a bit softer because most of the mascara’s concentrated at the tips rather than directly along the lash line. Try it out!
