Fiber optic patch cables are defined components of an internationally standardized structured cabling system according to ISO/IEC 11801. Historically, many different connectors have been used in structured cabling, with the following still being relevant: LC, SC, E2000, and MPO/MTPE. A fiber optic patch cable represents the shortest connection between a passive cabling port and an active network port, or a point-to-point connection of two active network ports. Quality classes allow for a qualitative differentiation of fiber optic patch cables depending on the network service. Similar terms for patch cables include patch cable, adapter cable, connection cable, hybrid cable, jumper, and connecting cord.
