Based on my experience with this card, I can imagine that the card reader is the main cause. The variation in quality is striking. I would not buy such a reader without doing some research. My advice: borrow another card reader or have the card checked by a specialist dealer. If the result is positive, I would buy the functioning reader there immediately.
