i bought this product and am wondering if i can just plug in hard drives? do i need to install drivers? theoretically hot plug is supported does anyone have any experience? and how can I fix the card to the board without the bezel (don't use a case)?

Yes, you can simply plug it in and it does not need any drivers. Attention: the more disks you connect, the less speed you have because it is only a multiplier and not a "real" expansion card. Max. 3-4 disks on one side should still bring the maximum. I have never used a hot plug.

Yes, as long as they are SATA III hard drives, pretty much anything should work.

I read in the comments that the controller runs without problems under FreeNAS and Unraid (even software RAID is not an issue). Have any of you had experience with this storage controller under OMV (open media vault)? It would be interesting to know what the compatibility is like (some Delock products do not work with Linux). Many thanks!

I have no experience with OMV, but under Linux (openSUSE Leap 15.1) this controller works perfectly.

Can this card also be installed in a PCIe x1 slot?

No X1 is not possible, the slot would be much too short. This card is a PCIexpress X2, so it only fits in slots from X2 and larger. It also works in X4, X8 or X16 slots, so it does not necessarily have to be plugged into an X2 slot.
