But if the TV does not read avi and neither does my box, and the only solution is to convert avi files, what is the difference between having a direct hard disk connected to the TV and mybox between TV and hard disk?

If your TV doesn't have an android operating system, that's a big difference. On android tv you can download the appropriate software that will read the avi files.
