It can be plugged in, but audio is not transmitted. It might work with a TRRS adapter (but I can't test it because I don't have one). The cable is quite short, but as long as you're sitting in front of the notebook, it's enough. And when you plug in the microphone (even with a TRRS adapter), you no longer get sound from the speakers on the notebook.
