Yes you can also back up games to it and PS4 games can even be played directly from the hard drive without having to load them onto the console.

Only the PS5 games have to be downloaded first and then you can play them.

I did it with my PS5 so that I have all PS4 games on the hard drive and the PS5 games are stored on an internal SSD hard drive.
