What is "the software"? The WD-suite or your operating system or any other? Depending on your OS you may not need the WD-Software, it just adds some comfort. E.g. with Windows you can format, repartition and use the drive connected by USB as an internal drive by standard tools of Windows.

On Apple, you should be able to make multiple partitions, even different Mac systems.
