Do I necessarily need WLAN to operate (transfer data) a Google Chromecast 3 or can I also connect the device via my smartphone's hotspot? I know that these are large data volumes, but I have unlimited on my smartphone :)

It also works via hotspot. It is also WLAN. Select your hotspot in the Chromecast settings and connect.
