I already have a Logitec keyboard and mouse that I connect wirelessly via USB (I think they call it a Unifying receiver). Can the headphones be connected to the existing receiver, or do they take up another USB input?

You need the Logitech Zone Wireless Plus headset. This works with an existing Unify dongle.

A separate USB dongle is included. However, you can also connect the headset directly to your laptop/PC via Bluetooth - it works just as well for me.
