I just bought a new IMAC Air 13 from Digitec and now realise that I cannot connect my iPhone 6/iPad Air 2 to my lovely new laptop! OR my back up drive! Is this the little magic I need to connect?

I don’t think this is the thing you are looking for.
As far as I know the new MacBooks do have a USB-C type connector. So you need to look for USB-C to lightning .
