WD My Passport
4 TB
I would like to use the disk on an older WD My Cloud as a backup medium. However, with My Passport encryption enabled. Is that possible? Can the old My Cloud do anything with it? I can't use the device without encryption. Here is my older My Cloud: https://support-en.wd.com/app/products/product-detail/p/126 Unfortunately, there is nothing in the documentation.
Very good question, no authoritative answer - sorry.
I have several WD My Passport 4TB in use.
Also a WD My Cloud NAS.
Although all devices would have encryption, I don't use it.
Don't trust the hardware or myself enough. There is nothing more stupid than a broken backup due to a hardware error or a forgotten PW.
The systems should be (backwards) compatible, purely in terms of the encryption technologies used. Even if the My Cloud is a bit older. But that's theory. From practical experience, I can only say that the WD My Passport 4TB is an excellent external disk, clearly more robust and durable than other products.
It works. My Passeport and My Book hard drives that are encrypted can also be decrypted with an older My Cloud. When mounting the USB drive, the hard drive appears with a lock icon at the top of the menu. Just click on the icon and enter the password. Thanks Western Digital for making the new stuff compatible with the old stuff.
