In my case the only socket I can plug the router into is in a very small space, the Devolo device would not fit there. Can I also connect it to the power via an extension cable, or does it really have to be plugged directly into the wall socket?

As far as I know, it works via an extension cable, but it is not optimal, which means you will lose performance (transmission capacity Mbit/s). Direct is always better and that's why they have a socket to plug something into.
