It also depends on the available network. On 3G, the data connection may be interrupted during a call. On 4G network it should work.

Yes, this works with any newer iPhone. Hotspot activated does not exclude simultaneous phone calls and vice versa. Of course, you need a plan that gives you enough data volume.
