The work of Adolf Dietrich (1877-1957) received significant attention during his lifetime, even though he was an outsider in the art scene of his time. Known as the 'Swiss Rousseau,' he was often celebrated for his almost fairy-tale rise from a small farmer in Berlingen in the canton of Thurgau to an internationally acclaimed artist. However, since his death, Dietrich's paintings have never been exhibited alongside works by other important artists of his era, despite being frequently discussed in relation to representatives of New Objectivity, Magical Realism, and Naïve Art. This new monograph presents, for the first time, both well-known and lesser-known works by Dietrich alongside paintings by Cuno Amiet, Albert Anker, Otto Dix, Giovanni Giacometti, Ferdinand Hodler, Henri Rousseau, Niklaus Stoecklin, Félix Vallotton, and others.
