Just a few months after a war history of over 25 years came to an end in Afghanistan, Roger Willemsen accompanies an Afghan friend on her journey home: from Kabul to Kunduz and through the steppe to the legendary Oxus, the border river to Tajikistan - an adventurous journey through a waking country. Willemsen speaks with simple frontline soldiers, commanders, and generals, meets drug smugglers, nomads, and wise men, encounters the disturbed and traumatized, human rights activists and prisoners, former Mujahideen and Taliban officials, female football players, and musicians. He visits factories, markets, schools, and the elders' council of a village, is a guest at an engagement party, and organizes a film screening for women and children. He crosses the life-threateningly mined Salang Pass, visits the hard-to-reach villages of the Tajiks, and meets Turkmen.
