Iñaki Ábalos and Juan Herreros founded their architecture office in Madrid in 1984, during a time after the end of the Franco regime when architects were valued more for their buildings than for their theories. Ábalos & Herreros consciously adopted a different focus and established a fruitful coexistence of theoretical research and practical work, questioning conventional notions of the architect's role. In 2012, the Canadian Centre for Architecture was able to acquire the archive of Ábalos & Herreros, which contains around 250 documents, sketches, slides, models, and drawings related to projects from the founding of the office until its dissolution in 2006. In 2014, the CCA invited three teams to work with this archival material: Kersten Geers and David Van Severen from Brussels, the Spanish architect Juan José Castellón based in Zurich, and Florian Idenburg and Jing Liu from New York.
