Product details

The death of philosophy, the end of history, the end of man, of the subject, of the West, of progress, of humanity – discourses about the end permeate Western thought. In his short essay "On a Recently Raised Noble Tone in Philosophy," Kant criticizes those who proclaim that philosophy has come to an end for the past two thousand years, and he attempts to demystify the noble tone. However, as Derrida shows, the Enlightenment's demarcation against an apocalyptic discourse merely unleashes "another wave of eschatological discourses in philosophy." Jacques Derrida uses Kant's text as a starting point for his reflections on apocalyptic discourse, on an apocalyptic tone in philosophy: Is there a paradigm, a fundamental scene of eschatological strategies? Can the apocalyptic tone be reduced to unanimity? Is the apocalyptic perhaps the transcendental condition of every discourse? For this German edition, Derrida provided a second text: "No Apocalypse, not now." A text that is direct, which is not typical for Derrida, a philosophical text about atomic end-time visions and the politics of deterrence.
