Product details

In 2019, the Vitra Design Museum will publish the "Atlas of Furniture Design," a comprehensive, encyclopedic overview of the history of modern furniture design. Featuring over 1,700 objects from more than 500 designers and 121 manufacturers, it includes approximately 2,800 images ranging from detailed object photographs to historical images documenting interiors, patents, brochures, and related works of art and architecture. The foundation of the "Atlas of Furniture Design" is the collection of the Vitra Design Museum, one of the largest of its kind with more than 7,000 works. The book showcases selected pieces from the most significant designers of the last 230 years and documents key periods in design history, including early industrial furniture made of bent wood and metal from the early 19th century, Art Nouveau and Secession pieces, as well as works by protagonists of classical modernism and post-war design, along with postmodern and contemporary pieces. The "Atlas of Furniture Design" involved a team of over 70 experts and contains more than 550 detailed texts on key objects. In-depth essays provide a socio-cultural and design historical context for four historical periods of furniture design and the highlighted pieces, complemented by a detailed appendix with designer biographies, glossaries, and elaborate infographics. The "Atlas of Furniture Design" is an indispensable resource for collectors, scholars, and experts, as well as a beautifully designed object that appeals to design enthusiasts.
