Mozart's letters are reports or messages, often both intertwined or mixed together, and almost always characterized by captivating eloquence, even later when the request for money becomes a third theme. They testify to the steadily increasing ease in articulating a phenomenal intellectual agility. The mastery of the means that made Mozart the greatest musician benefited him in writing letters: he possessed a vast synthetic-emotional range behind which he could conceal himself, and he applied it without any pretense. The self-documentation in his letters is never a conscious representation of his state of mind; rather, it is, on the contrary, discretion disguised as communicativeness. Thus, we have in them the profoundly moving testimony of a self-control akin to that found in the great masters.
