Product details

Unique. Deeply touching, in a language full of strength and poetry. This book has changed my life.

Jacques Lusseyran lost his sight at the age of eight. However, the boy manages to transform this stroke of fate into an inner strength that enables him to see in an unparalleled way. Thus, the charismatic teenager becomes the leader of a resistance group against the Nazis and survives the Buchenwald concentration camp. His extraordinary life story speaks of an indestructible faith in life; inspiring, poetic, and profoundly moving.

In 1932, Jacques Lusseyran, as an eight-year-old child, loses his eyesight after an accident. Thanks to his strength and the support of his parents, the growing boy learns to accept his blindness and to see differently. For him, seeing differently means discovering all those things that a sighted person would hardly perceive. Light takes on a physical form for him, and the objects around him become light, as do colors, sounds, smells, and shapes. His self-confidence and inner strength have an almost magical aura for people who need advice and help.

At the age of seventeen, Jacques Lusseyran founded an organization of young people within the Résistance that fought against the German occupying forces. In 1943, he was arrested with his friends and deported to Buchenwald. Amidst his own and others' suffering, torture, and murder, the young Lusseyran remained a fighter against pain, despair, and wickedness through what he calls his inner light. He was able to help many, whom they admired as the man who did not die, with his unwavering trust.
