The expeditions of Jacques Cartier mark the beginning of European settlement in Canada. In 1534, the navigator sets off for Newfoundland, intending to find a passage through North America as the first Frenchman. However, he must return home later that same year without success. In 1535, he sets out again and reaches the Huron village of Stadacona, where the city of Quebec will be founded in 1608. Cartier ventures deeper into the mainland via the St. Lawrence River. At Hochelaga, he climbs a mountain that he names "Mont Royal," which later gives its name to the city of Montreal. Yet, Cartier looks out over endless forests and realizes that he will not find a passage this time either. Two-thirds of his crew die from scurvy during the winter, and with the meager remainder, Cartier returns to France. However, he has not given up on his goal. In 1541, he embarks on his third and final journey.
