The Duchess Anna Amalia Library in Weimar is the most important library of German literature between 1750 and 1850. Researchers from around the world utilize its archive, which contains nearly a million volumes. On September 2, 2004, a devastating fire destroyed the historic building of the Anna Amalia Library along with 50,000 precious books and manuscripts that were soon to be transferred to the newly constructed deep storage. The dramatic rescue efforts and the spontaneous willingness to donate from countless book lovers made headlines. In the autumn of 2007, the 200th anniversary of Anna Amalia's death, the historic main building will be reopened for use after extensive restoration.
