The last lectures of Michel Foucault at the Collège de France are dedicated to parrhesia: the frank, public, and rebellious speech. It is the central theme of his later thought: the courage to speak the truth, through which sincere speech intervenes in politics. The governance of the self and others reveals the forgotten ethical foundation of Athenian democracy. The courage to speak the truth confronts Socrates, the radiant founding figure of Western philosophy, with the Cynics, the self-proclaimed underdogs of thought. In both lectures, Foucault brings to light unacknowledged insights from the margins of the official history of philosophy. At the same time, he articulates nothing less than his philosophical legacy. No one will be able to read these texts without recognizing Foucault's own courage to speak the truth within them.
