The Villa Wolf in Guben (now Gubin), built between 1925 and 1927, was Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's first distinctly modern structure. At the end of World War II and in the immediate post-war period, the residential building was destroyed. Mies van der Rohe's construction practice—internationally known for visionary glass skyscrapers and concrete buildings—remained conventional for a long time. With Villa Wolf, he presented a radical reinterpretation of the bourgeois residence: an open, diagonal sequence of spaces facing the garden, alongside cubic stacks of utility areas and bedrooms. The building was overshadowed in reception by the great success of Mies van der Rohe's later works, such as the German Pavilion in Barcelona and the Villa Tugendhat in Brno. This volume presents the history of Villa Wolf in Gubin and documents the recent excavation of the basement as well as the drawn reconstruction as a prerequisite for rebuilding.
