The expeditions of Jacques Cartier marked the beginning of European settlement in Canada. In 1534, Cartier set out to find a passage through North America, but was unsuccessful that year. He embarked on another journey in 1535 and reached the Iroquois village of Stadacona, where the city of Quebec was founded in 1608. Cartier ventured deeper into the mainland via the St. Lawrence River and named a mountain "Mont Royal," which later inspired the name of the city of Montreal. However, Cartier again did not find a passage. Two-thirds of his crew perished during this mission. In 1541, Cartier embarked on a final journey to Canada.
