Natalia Ginzburg, born in 1916 in Palermo, spent her childhood and youth in Turin. In 1938, she married the Slavic scholar Leone Ginzburg, who was murdered by German soldiers in a Roman prison in 1944. After the war, Ginzburg lived in Turin and, from 1952, in Rome with her second husband, the English professor Gabriele Baldini. She worked for the Einaudi publishing house for nearly her entire life. From 1983, she served as an independent member of parliament. She raised four children. Natalia Ginzburg passed away in Rome in 1991. Her works include novels, short stories, plays, and essays. Alice Vollenweider, born in 1929 in Zurich, completed her studies in Romance languages with a dissertation on the influence of Italian on French cuisine as reflected in language. She lived as a freelance writer, literary critic, and translator from Italian in Zurich. Alice Vollenweider passed away in 2011.
